At home she changed from her damp clothing and into a comfortable pair of baggy slacks and an oversized tee. The shirt belonged to Bryce. She sniffed, hoping for a whiff of him, but the shirt had been washed and now smelled like mountain-fresh fabric softener. Oh, what she wouldn’t give to lie next to her man and sniff the scent that was uniquely his, all night long.

Motivated by that desire, Ajali set up the two candles, lit them, sat in her chair and began deep breathing. She counted backward from ten to one and then began telling her body to relax. Her face began to tingle. The tingling sensation moved down to her chin and neck. Then the darkness behind her eyes became even darker and darker until she felt plunged into complete blackness. She felt weightless and began to lift. The impulse to fight the ascension was strong, but she let go and allowed herself to float until once again, she found herself hovering above her body.

During her first visit, she’d been so focused on his apparent despair, she hadn’t paid attention to the appearance of his apartment.

Ajali was appalled. His laptop was in pieces, scattered on the floor. Clothing had been discarded all over the place. Open CD cases were strewn about. Plates on top of the bureau had congealed food stuck on them. She was astounded. Bryce was a neat, organized person. He would never live in squalor such as this.

But the worst sight of all was Bryce, lying on his back asleep in bed. He was unshaven and looked as if he hadn’t bathed in weeks. His hair was matted—terribly unkempt. Despite his disheveled appearance, the love Ajali felt for him poured from her heart. As if her love for him was something tangible that he could feel, Bryce began to stir.

But before he became fully awake, a thick, dark mist seeped from the top bureau drawer. It was a dreadful and terrifying sight. It floated toward the bed and then slowly thinned out and began to take form. There was no depth, just a
